Formal events can be dreary affairs if your presence is required and entertainment is sadly lacking. One way to spice up attendance at such an event is to find ways to entertain yourself that will not bring trouble your way. The next time you are at a black tie dinner, start checking out the cuff links worn by other diners or the speaker of honor.
A simple stroll through the room may let you know about the co-worker whose favorite hobby is astrology or confirm that that renowned Giants fan couldn’t leave his fan gear at home, even on a formal evening. The architects may have found cuff links that show off their attraction to drafting, the accountants may well have math symbols adorning their sleeves and you may even be surprised to find music notes, computers or cuff links sporting photos of a proud father’s brood waiting at home for him.
A matter of choice
Cuff links are an aspect of men’s fashion that may surprise you, or the set of cuff links may leave little to the imagination (yes, you know so-and-so’s last name starts with S). The comparison of choices, however, may get you through an hour or more of time spent at a formal gala or benefit dinner. When seated for the meal, up close inspections of those dining to your left and across the table might open an opportunity to discuss the man’s cuff links, why they were his accessory of choice and maybe even the sentiment behind them.
Doctors may choose a thermometer over a syringe for obvious reasons, but what about the doctor who opts for a set of light up cuff links? Maybe his young son is more interested in the lights than he is, but wearing the set keeps him entertained by reminding him of the bright young mind who wants to follow directly in his footsteps.
Women and cufflinks
Keep in mind as well that women who spend most of their time dressed in business suits may have their own preferred set of cuff links. A pair that color coordinates or a pair that shows a love of animals can say a lot about the woman who wears them. Those who have a lot of pride in an Irish heritage may show this through their cuff links, as well as a woman who spends her days in front of a classroom of students and who wears a ruler as a cuff link, a gift from one student whose life was changed forever by her daily determination to teach.
